BARC Dunlop Motorsport News Saloon Car Championship Brands Hatch GP Circuit - Saturday May 22nd 2010 |
Just six days after Mallory Park we were on our way to Brands Hatch. This time it was on the Grand prix circuit which is Rod’s favourite track. In practice he took pole by 4.4 seconds which did not bode well for a close race. However, Darren Bly had gone off into the gravel trap, so we expected him to challenge hard in the race. For the first race Rod controlled the rolling start well and then launched off into an ever increasing lead. Attention switched to an interesting battle for second place. Initially Joss Ronchetti held sway but gradually Craig Davies closed in and claimed the runner up spot. Bly retired with a turbo oil pipe issue. Into fourth came Ray Barrow, also taking class B honours, after it was discovered that Malcolm Wise had taken a short lap when he had overheating problems. Malcolm was re-classified 18th. Nigel Craig had his Subaru going well in fifth as Richard Brent took the class E win in sixth overall. Class C went to newcomer Gavin Thomson in another very rapid Peugeot 205 whilst Graham Bahr was the lone runner in class D. The invitation tin top class went to Gary Chappell after David Leigh beached his Seat Leon in the Surtees gravel trap. Race two followed a similar script as Rod sped away initially, then eased off to enjoy the majestic splendour of the 2.36 miles of Kentish countryside. This time Bly came motoring through from the back of the grid to move into second place, but just as it looked like his luck had changed the car ran out of fuel. So it was down to Craig and Joss to provide the excitement, with the red Xsport run RS500 taking the runner up spot (and driver of the day) by just 0.37 of a second. Barrow, Thomson, Brent, Bahr and Chappell all repeated their class wins. Wise had an expensive looking blow up going through Hawthorns, hopefully the damage is not too serious. |
